google+

google+ (google plus) added a games section the other day. the technorati are assuming this is bringing the social network closer to success:

For all the hype it has gotten and all the users it has gained, it’s easy to forget that Google+ has only been out for a month and a half. But they’re moving fast to ensure they don’t flop again in the social space. And today brings the biggest “next step” yet: Games. Gaming has obviously been a huge part of the success of Facebook over the years. It has been so popular, in fact, that one company, Zynga, has become a major player in the gaming space, and will soon go public as a result. And guess who is on board with Google+ Games too? Yep. Zynga.

unfortunately, i don’t know if anyone joined facebook because of games. facebook was great because you could easily look people up when someone mentioned them and keeping track of people you know. sure, facebook apps are popular. they certainly help to keep people on the site, but they did not convince anyone to join. one could argue the opposite. they pushed some people to leave when they got fed up with the clutter and an avalanche of invites.

there is one feature that keeps a large portion coming back to facebook. it is events. for many, it is the preferred way of organizing functions and you miss out if you are not on facebook. google+, if you really want to attract some users, add event invitations. that would actually be a really useful feature, especially considering you already have emails for all my contacts, so they don’t even need to be on it for it to be functional. and after they get a few invites, they just might end up joining.

my first question on tumblr!

it’s difficult to answer. i suppose i know how to work the system. but even then, i am not that good.

why?

why should i do this? that is an excellent question. perhaps i shouldn’t. i’ve tried to start a blog of some sort several times now. this is just the next iteration. sometimes there is stuff i would like to say that i know no one i know will really appreciate. to the internet! let me let you in on the greatest insight. there is a place for every niche online.

i put on some ‘girl talk’ and i thought i would blast out a great entry. that didn’t happen. but you know what? there is always tomorrow. i guess this is a nice preparation for some disappointment for all who read this.

beginning of the end

we had a sort of office holiday party. it’s complicated. i actually had four work holiday parties this year. as much as i am a sucker for free food and drink, they mostly sucked.

anyway, i had a bunch of wine, came back to my desk, and started this tumblr. stay tuned for some exciting, but probably mostly boring stories.
